Craft an Item - Downtime Activity in D&D 5e

Downtime Activity
Craft an Item

DM's can allow players to craft their own armor, weapons, clothing, or other kinds of nonmagical gear. The character needs the following:

  • Money: The cost of raw materials is equal to half of the item's selling value.
  • Time: To determine how many workweeks (5 days) it takes to craft an item, divide its costs by 50. Items that cost more than 50 gp can be completed over longer periods of time, as long as the work in progress is stored in a safe location.
  • Proficiencies: A character needs to be proficient with the tools needed to craft an item. A DM should use their discretion regarding that proficiencies can be used. For example, studded leather armor could require Leatherworking to create the leather base, and Blacksmithing to created the metal studs. Or, the DM can require only a single proficiency and assume that the costs of the materials covered the other "parts" of the project.
  • Equipment: Characters also need to have the appropriate equipment and tools in order to create an item. A blacksmith can have the standard tools (i.e. a hammer, tongs), but without a heated forge or an anvil, they may not be able to complete their task.
  • Collaboration: (Optional) Multiple characters can combine their efforts, and divide the time needed to create an item. Use your judgment when determining how many characters can collaborate on an item. A particularly tiny item, like a ring, might allow only one or two workers, whereas a large, complex item might allow four or more workers. Everyone who collaborates needs to have the appropriate tool proficiency.

Below is a list of standard equipment with crafting cost, crafting time and some recommended skill proficiencies. The cost is half the sale price (rounded up). If multiple skill proficiencies are listed, the DM can decide if only a single proficiency is needed, or both are required. For example, a jug can be created using glass by a glassblower, wood by a carpenter, or metal by a blacksmith (only a single proficiency is needed). However, a battleaxe may require a carpenter to create a wooden handle and a blacksmith to create the blade (or the DM can use only one proficiency, and have the "crafting cost" cover the other element). The list is not final and can be changed at the DM's discretion (i.e. we list arrows with woodcarving, but a DM may decide to allow a carpenter to also craft the item).
